Newsela is a web tool I learned about at Edcamp Baltimore this year. This free site provides news articles from around the globe in a format designed for students. One of the best features of this site is the ability to adjust the lexile level of each text based on your students’ abilities. Many of the articles are linked to common core standards, and include quizzes based on those standards. Teachers can create a free account and set up multiple classes. Students are given a code to use to log in with, removing the need for email addresses. Each class can be assigned different articles by the teacher, and progress in the quizzes can be tracked.
