I had a great STEM lab today, trying out one of my new genetics lessons.  One of my sixth grade classes came down and we did the Easter Egg Genetics lab.  Students had to use punnett squares to determine the potential offspring of different egg colors.  We used plastic eggs (half price after Easter!), and used colored beads inside to represent the offspring colors and to make the activity self-checking.  We had to review punnett squares at the beginning, since they have used pre-made squares before but never created their own, but once that was done they did an excellent job on their worksheets.  There were a lot of great questions and comments from the kids.  I am looking forward to our next genetics lab.  I have several similar lessons lined up so I don’t have to teach the same exact lesson each time.
